Patented in 1726 by royal grant from King George I, the estate was first stewarded by Colonel Joshua Fry — surveyor, statesman, Commander-in-Chief of the Virginia Militia, and the first Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at the College of William & Mary.

Fry was not only a military leader — he was a mentor to Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson, and an early architect of Virginia’s territorial expansion. Through his mapping of the colony’s western frontier, Fry helped define the physical boundaries of early America.

In 1754, while leading Virginia militia forces north during the French and Indian War, Colonel Fry fell from his horse and died en route to battle. His second-in-command — a 22-year-old George Washington — assumed command.

Local accounts recount that Washington later encamped at Meander for nearly a month, reportedly out of respect for the Fry family. Whether strategic or symbolic, this quiet gesture binds the estate to the early military career of the future first President of the United States.

From its earliest days, Meander stood within the orbit of those who would shape a nation.

History
That Endures

From Washington to Jefferson, from Lafayette to the defining chapters of a young republic, the Estate at Meander has remained quietly intertwined with the American story.

Across nearly three centuries, it has evolved — from frontier homestead to gathering place, from private estate to welcoming retreat.

Its legacy lives on in the names of our suites, the character of The Reverend, the preservation of Elim Hall, and in the land itself — carefully stewarded for generations to come.

History here is not staged. It is lived — with reverence, continuity, and care.
