Sustainability
at Meander

Rooted in History. Restored by Nature.

Rooted in History.
Restored by Nature.

At Meander, sustainability is not a trend it is a responsibility.

From the moment Colonel Joshua Fry patented this land in 1726, stewardship has been woven into the story of the Estate. Nearly three centuries later, we continue that legacy with intention: caring for our guests, our team, our partners, and the Blue Ridge landscape that surrounds us.

The world faces profound environmental and social challenges. At Meander, we believe in the ideals of sustainable development leaving a better world for future generations. This ethos lives in our DNA and guides every decision we make, from restoration and design to culinary sourcing and spa operations.

Our sustainability strategy is anchored in four pillars:

1. Heritage

We are caretakers of history.

Meander is more than a property; it is a living estate with deep Virginia roots. We are committed to:

· Preserving the architectural integrity of the Manor House and historic structures

· Restoring rather than replacing wherever possible

· Honoring the stories of the land and those who shaped it

· Integrating heritage experiences — guided walks, garden tours, and storytelling — into the guest journey

Our approach balances restoration with renewal, ensuring that the Estate evolves responsibly while respecting its past.

2. Local Sourcing

We believe that community is cultivated locally.

Through Harvest & Hearth and our Estate gardens, we prioritize:

· Seasonal, farm-to-fork cuisine

· Partnerships with local farmers, artisans, and winemakers

· Virginia-sourced wines, spirits, and craft beverages

· Estate-grown herbs and produce wherever possible

By shortening supply chains and celebrating regional abundance, we reduce environmental impact while strengthening the local economy.

3. Environmental Protection

Nature restores us — and we are committed to protecting it.

Our environmental initiatives include:

· Energy-efficient building systems and responsible mechanical design

· Water stewardship in our thermal wellness experience

· Native plantings and regenerative landscaping practices

· Reduction of single-use plastics across guest rooms and spa

· Waste reduction, composting, and recycling programs

· Exploration of renewable energy solutions and EV charging infrastructure

As we develop Elim Spa Village and expand the Estate, sustainability is embedded into planning, procurement, and operations.

4. Social Responsibility

A sustainable future begins with people.

We are committed to:

· Providing meaningful employment and professional development for our team

· Cultivating a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace

· Supporting local charities and community initiatives

· Creating gathering spaces that foster connection — from weddings to wellness retreats

We view Meander as a place where people come not only to rest, but to reconnect — with themselves, with others, and with nature.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Sustainability is a journey. We continuously evaluate our practices, measure our impact, and seek partnerships that align with our values. As stewards of this historic Estate, we accept the responsibility of balancing growth with preservation.

At Meander, centuries of Virginia heritage meet the quiet rhythms of the Blue Ridge.

History grounds us. Nature restores us. And sustainability guides us forward.
